Church Steeple With Seagull Oil Pastel
Oil Pastel Artwork and Prints by Dominic White
This painting of the steeple of the First Parish Church in Portland, Maine was painted from photographs I took from the top of a neighboring building. As I was taking my reference photos a seagull flew into the frame and I was lucky enough to catch it.
The church itself was constructed in 1825 for a congregation started in 1674. It was the site of several historic events important to the shaping of Portland and Maine including speeches supporting Maine's statehood and several anti-slavery meetings. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
You can read more about the history of this Church, and about some of its colorful past ministers, here.
