Kite Festival Plein Air Oil Pastel
Oil Pastel Artwork and Prints by Dominic White
Plein Air oil pastel painting created on-site during a kite festival in South Portland, Maine.
The Bug Light Kite Festival is held every year in South Portland, Maine in Bug Light Park. The park, at the entrance to Portland Harbor, gets near-constant ocean breezes making it a popular locations for kite enthusiasts of all ages. The view of this painting is looking from the entrance of the park towards the city of Portland, which is seen in the background.
Painting on site has a different character than working of in the studio from reference photos. Not only do the subjects you paint not stay still for you, which is reflected in the almost-ghostly, loosely sketched figures, but people want to come up and see what you’re doing. Children especially would come up and ask if I got their kite, or if they could be in the painting. Whenever I could, I said, “yes.”
